The black swan rises from the shadows like a Dark Goddess or Black Madonna. Sensual black orchids and deathly shadows contrast bridal anemone blossoms and white-feathered cygnets. This visual poem of light and dark dance across a silver background, veiled by a violet night, where the Cygnus constellation is visible.
The calligraphed words are plucked from Hans Christian Anderson's parable "The Ugly Duckling," about a young swan raised by ducks, whose primal longing to be beautiful and belong, is finally fulfilled when he grows up to resemble his true kin. The Black Swan similarly represents an undesired imposter in the Swan Lake myth, as well as the Jungian shadow self, banished to the unconscious realm.
In this mythic painting, beauty and belonging transcend the duality of light and dark, reclaiming and restoring that which was exiled to the shadows, and enriching new life with wisdom.

Ancient Egyptians worshipped the scarab beetle Khepri for its ability to roll spheres of fertilizer across the desert. Khepri rolls the sun from the below eastern horizon into the morning sky, renewing life. If you've ever rolled dough between your hands, or thrown clay on a potter's wheel, you know that spherical forms naturally arise from circular motion. This is how worlds like ours came to be round, as the planet and its orbit continuously form each other. The scarab and its spheres represents this creative force of cosmogenesis through movement.

The Rose Gate of the Underworld represents the womb-tomb of cosmic rebirth. In Sumerian mythology, the Goddess Inanna, Queen of Heaven, descends through Seven Gates (the seven chakras) to meet her dark sister Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld, who kills and resurrects Inanna.
Astrologically, this Rose Gate corresponds to the Venus's descent below the horizon and behind the Sun, where she "dies" as the Morning Star and is "reborn" as the Evening Star. In the Rose Priestess mystery teachings, this energetic portal corresponds to the Earth Star Chakra, located 6-18" below one's feet.
This painting features a black and white Dragon Rose, a rare variety of rose with multicolored petals due to crossbreeding. Symbolizing the simultaneous expression of life and death, the Dragon Rose blooms from the Earth's magmic core.
In a matrix of geometric poetry, the rose is surrounded by glowing Dragon Lines, a system of underground energy channels. As these glowing channels intersect, they become a complex spider's web, glistening in the cavernous dark, reflecting the neon colors of nightlife.

The Rose Gate of Manifestation corresponds to the Root Chakra, ruled by the element of Earth. The resilient shrub rose grows close to the ground.
The rose's spreading roots sink into the geometric outline of a cube, nested within a system of circles and squares, culminating in the four petals of the Muladhara Chakra symbol. The red door evokes a portal of manifestation, as well as the yogic technique Mula Bandha ("root lock") which prevents energy from leaking out of the body at this important gateway.
Painted in a classical subtractive technique, this painting pays homage to the historical "roots" of oil painting, with scumbling sgraffito revealing the stained surface beneath.

The Rose Gate of Wisdom corresponds to the Third Eye Chakra, center of inner vision. In yogic tradition, this is the chakra where the body's polar energies (masculine and feminine) find merge in harmony, balance, and nonduality.
This painting utilizes color and geometry to envision the unification of dualities. The overlapping circles form a fundamental sacred-geometry: the Vesica Piscis. Inspired by the optical illusion created by red-and-blue glasses, the anaglyphic technology used to experience movies in 3D, I colored the overlapping circles red and blue, with purple representing the unified field, beyond the illusion of separation.
In relaxing the eyes, vision reveals is illusory nature. Through the sacred geometry of the Vesica Piscis (the Eye of Wisdom), the flower and the fruit become one essence, one system, one being. The Blue Morpho butterfly, its wings adorned with false eyes, is liberated by this enlightening wisdom.

Hidden behind the blue sky is an iridescent phrase, a message I received in Egypt during a chakra-opening aromatherapy experience: "Sweet honey words must be spoken to be received."
Written beneath the landscape are the lyrics to a song that my widowed grandmother sang for me, even though her voice cracked, because my grandfather took her beloved singing voice with him when he died.
Resting on the horizon between land and sky, between the spoken and the unspoken, is the etheric blue rose, from which flows a steady stream of consciousness.

Astrologically, this Rose Gate corresponds to Venus's conjunction with the Sun, when our sister planet is hidden from our sight by glorious solar light. In the Rose Priestess mystery teachings, this energetic portal corresponds to the Soul Star Chakra, located approximately 13" above the head.
The geometric construction of this painting mirrors the proportional harmony between the Earth's diameter and the Moon's (which is equal to the Golden Ratio). Descending from a distant glacial peak (a pristine realm of crystalline wisdom), the white winged lion steps through an ornate portal into the chamber of consciousness, activating hidden light-language within the walls.
This regal painting anchors the spiritual wisdom that we are all the "Chosen One" of our own story. That your spirit chose this incarnation and life-path; and yet, you must continue to remember your calling and choose the path you came to walk, moment after moment, again and again.
This is the first vision I received after committing myself to painting full-time, embracing what I always knew was my purpose. It was also “chosen” as one of my first paintings to be shown professionally, in an international exhibit of Visionary Artists.
