Echoing the spiritual wheel of karma (Samsara) or the wheel of fortune (fate), the Golden Wheel represents one's ever-present duty and opportunity to seize one's Destiny - a reminder that you are the captain of your soul.
The crimson rope twists to form a Celtic Sailor Knot, representing unbreakable bonds and the infinite. This red rigging is an allusion to the "Red Thread," a cabalistic symbol for lineage, legacy, and karmic ties.
The spinning wheel and serpentine knot emerge from the colorful clouds, like a long-forgotten dream awakening, taking shape in the nebulous subconscious, sending stars flying into the distant night.

La Caravella hovers over a landscape of painted desert, as if sailing on memories of the ancient sea that was once here. The aqueous sky holds hopeful promise, ready to end the long drought with a strike of inspiration.
With scenery that could be Georgia O'Keefe's New Mexico, the Arizona canyons of my childhood, or the unexplored terrain of Mars...
Collage elements include vintage botanical drawings, a vintage postcard from the Grand Canyon, excerpts from Richard Crashaw's 1652 poem "The Weeper," and my own handmade paper with gold-leaf inclusions.

A Fata Morgana is a mirage that occurs at open sea, resembling an upside-down ship hovering over the horizon. These mysterious sightings inspired nautical myths like the “Flying Dutchman.” The name "Fata Morgana" is a reference to Morgan Le Fey, enchantress of Arthurian legend, and refers to a shaper of Fate. It was this esoteric poetry that inspired me to paint this peculiar phenomenon…
Fata Morgana is also the name of a flower species (Scabiosa Atropurpurea). This little-known fact found me already working on this painting, when my mother sent me a pack of wildflower seeds from Texas (my birthplace), without realizing the connection to the painting I was working on. To honor this synchronicity, the “Fata Morgana” seed packet is collaged into La Caravella's sails, along with maps of the arctic circle and poetry from a zine about cloud-gazing.
In this cosmic phantasm, the horizon itself is an optical illusion, a trick of perspective, a mingling of light. On many levels, this piece echoes the mysteries of Fate, synchronicity, and the relationship between magick and illusion.

Swallows with gold and silver wings are soaring ‘round a spiral vortex. At this point of no return, the journey itself takes the lead. The only way forward is through... It’s time to surrender to the Dream, to the story you came to live.
Steadied by the Golden Wheel of destiny, propelled by sails of collaged memorabilia and pulpy handmade paper, La Caravella is beckoned onward and inward by three long-tailed swallows (a nautical omen symbolizing the hope of homecoming after a long journey).
